How long can respite care last?

Respite can range from a few hours (in-home) to several weeks (residential). Most in-home respite is arranged in 4- to 12-hour blocks. Residential respite stays are typically 3 to 30 days.

Does Medicare or insurance cover respite care?

Medicare covers up to 5 consecutive days of respite care per benefit period for hospice patients. Medi-Cal may cover some respite through Home and Community-Based Services waivers. Long-term care insurance often covers respite. Most private-pay respite costs $20-35/hour in-home or $150-350/day in a facility.

Can respite care be provided in my home?

Yes. In-home respite is very common. A trained aide comes to the home and follows the patient's established care routine. This is often the preferred option for patients who are most comfortable in familiar surroundings.

What if my loved one needs skilled nursing care during respite?
